Blessing #17: I am Powerful
“With great power comes great responsibility.” ~Anonymous
There have been many variations of the sobering phrase, with great power comes great responsibility, that have been spoken by leaders since the days of Jesus of Nazareth to Sir Winston Churchill to Spiderman’s uncle Ben Parker. Truly, the power that we each hold within us is great. Our thoughts, words, and actions have the power to create or destroy, to heal or harm, to bless or curse, to encourage or oppress, to strengthen or sabotage, to save or abandon, to love or to hate. We have the power to make a difference in our own lives and in the lives of those around us every single day.
In a world where so many things seem to be beyond our control, there remains a deep reserve of power within each one of us.
I have much more power than I often realize. I have the power to control my thoughts, my words, and my actions. I have the power to change my surroundings and create an environment that is well-suited to my needs and desires. I get to choose where I work, where I live, how I dress, what I eat, where I spend my money and with whom I spend my time.
I had the power to change everything.
For many years, I lived in fear and under the control of other people. From bad boyfriends to bad bosses, it was a pattern that I kept repeating over and over, with different players in control but I was always in the same role: victim. It was awful! I felt trapped, and I felt powerless. Without excusing the abusive behavior I experienced (because it is never OK), I didn’t realize that I had a part in creating these situations, and though it may be difficult or scary- I could also change my circumstances. The wild, beautiful, free spirit within me was being smothered, crushed, beaten and broken daily until I realized that I had the power to change everything.
So I did.
Today, I choose to use my power to bless others, to create beauty, to strengthen connections, and to love greatly.
